Classification Overview for Alpine Skiing
Competition is only possible within the following categories:
Category Visually Impaired
B1- Blind, totally blind participants
B2 - Visual Impairment, visual acuity of 20/60
B3 - Visual Impairment, visual acuity above 20/60 to 6/60
Category Standing
LW 1 - Double above knee amputation
LW 2 - Single above knee amputation
LW 3 - Double below knee amputation/CPalsy
LW 4 - Single below knee amputation
LW 5/7 - Double arm amputation
LW 6/8 - Amputation or other disabilities in one arm
LW 9 - one upper limb and one lower limb disability
Category Sitting
LW 10 - no functional sitting balance
LW 11 - fair sitting balance
LW 12 - good sitting balance, incomplete paraplegic/amputation of the lower limb/s
*Note: To make it easier for spectators and for greater competition to smaller categories, the categories above are grouped into - Seated, Standing and Visual Impaired Skiers for medal purposes.
A complicated factor system is used based on level of disability within each of these groups, so as an athlete crosses the line the actual time is factored and gives an final time. See www.ipc-alpineskiing.org for more details.
