BDST Season 2007/08

 

The International Paralympic Committee has released the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games Qualification Guide the purpose of which is to provide the British Paralympic Association (our National Paralympic Committee (NPC)) with a comprehensive document that outlines the qualification systems necessary to be met for athletes and teams seeking to compete in the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Games.
 
The management of BDST will be working closely with the BPA to ensure appropriate structure is put in place specifically in support of our sport-specific qualification criteria. 

 

 

 

Willoughby secures two further silvers in both the Slalom and Giant Slalom

 

The final point races of the GB season took place in La Molina this week. A few familiar faces were in attendance to get a final boost to those points achieving a head start in the rankings for next season. Atheletes included Joe Willoughby, Talan Skeels-Piggins and newcomer Steven Hutchinson.

 

The race included Super G on the Thursday followed by Giant Slalom Friday finishing with the slalom on Saturday

 
Final Medal tally hits 16 as Sun Peaks competition comes to a close
 
 
Following the fairly long drive over from Kicking Horse to Sun Peaks, the team is safely unpacked at their hotel in anticpiation of four days of technical races.
 
These combine both Canadian National Championships and an IPCAS-NorAm.
 
The first races saw the men exceed their Kimberley success in going one better with a 1, 2, 3, & 4 in the mens GS and 2 & 3 in the womens.
 
The second day 1 & 3 for the men and 2 & 3 for the women.
 
The third day a 1 & 3 for both the men and women in the first of the slalom races.
 
Final days races brought a further gold and bronze for the men with the women picking up an additional silver.
 
The team now pack up and head across to Whistler for a well deserved break and an opportunity to meet up and be congratulated by Phil Lane, British Paralympic Association, Chief Executive who is out in Canada working with VANOC and BDST management in connection with the preparations for the Vancouver 2010 games where GB Alpine want to make their mark.

Brits steal the show with an unprecedented 17 medals... 
 
Following a couple of days of strong training in wonderful sunny conditions GB produced the results in the two downhill races on 6 March and two Super G competition on 7 Mar. With a strong team (7 of the squad are competing) Sean Rose, in peak form, produced two scintillating downhill runs to achieve double podium gold.

Bonn, Germany - with less than two years to go before the opening of the Olympic and Pralympic Winter Games, the international Olympic Committee (IOC) Co-ordination Commission, including International Paralympic Committee (IPC) representative Rita van Driel, successfully concluded
 

 

Willoughby currently sitting high in 1st place in the IPCAS-European Cup points list

 
 
Following a succession of podiums this season on the Europa Cup circuit Joe Willoughby now has the enviable position of topping the IPCAS-European Cup combined point rankings in overall first place in the female sitting skiers category with 800 points, 85 points ahead of her Swiss rival Anita Fuhrer in second and Austria's Claudia Loesch on 580 points in third.
 
A fantastic achievement Joe - A very well done from the BDST managment and fellow athletes. Joe now makes the well deserved move up to the BDST Womens 'A' squad.

IPCAS - World Cup Rankings - Rose an impressive 6th in the Slalom
 
Following two impressive World Cup competitions by Sean Rose in both Abtenau and Queyras, he now has the enviable position of being ranked 6th in the world in respect of his slalom success.

IPC- European Cup - Solleftea, Sweden (31 Jan - 3 Feb 08)
 
 
Whilst Sean Rose moved off to Canada for some additional training in Kimberley, Willoughby, following a successful World Cup, continued her onslaught on the Europa Cup circuit with a trip to Sweden clocking up a very impressive set of results in both the Slalom and Giant Slalom. Willoughby will join Rose and the rest of the squad later this month for a GB attack on a selection of NorAm Races and a visit to the Vancouver 2010 alpine host resort of Whistler.

IPC-World Cup - Queyras, France (12-19 Jan 08)

 

 

Rose continues form with a 6th and 10th in Slalom

 

 

Some 12 hours drive from Abtenau, Sean and Coach Jane Stevens, headed off to Queyras in the Hautes-Alpes, France which is situated just on the border with Italy and south of the 2006 Paralympic alpine venue of Sestriere.

On the back of great results from the BDST athletes in the first few competitions of the 2007-2008 season Great Britain has moved up from their end of season position of 12th to currently stand 11th in the IPCAS Nation Ranking.
 
 

 
 
 
 
Willoughby and Rose both pulled off further great results in Rin's second slalom race on the Olympia Patscherkofel course with a 2nd and 5th respectivley.

IPC-European Cup - Pitztaler Gletscher, Austria (14-17 Dec 07)

 

A full compliment of BDST athletes hit the slopes of Pitztal for the first European Cup race of the season. Slalom on Friday 14th Dec, Giant Slalom 15th, and Super-G on 16th with excellent result.

 

 

 
 

 
IPC-NA - Winter Park Open (17-19 Dec 07)
 
Liz Miller went one better in the GS over her Breckenridge result finally clocking up a 5th after completing her two runs . This was followed the following day with a further 6th place in the Super-G race on 18th.

Miller kicks off the the Race season in Breckenridge
 
Liz Miller produced the first set of creditable results for the new season with her attendance at the Hartford Ski Spectacular in Breckenridge, Colorado in the initial combination of IPC NorAm races. In snowy conditions she achieved two great 6th places in both the Slalom and Giant Slalom. We now look forward to seeing the rest of the BDST athletes, who are currently based in Europe, building on this success through their attendance at the IPCAS-EC-GER in Pitztal, Austria from 14th - 16th December. Liz continues to concentrate on the North American circuit and her next meet in WinterPark, Colorado 17th - 19th December.
 

 
DSUK and BDST attend opening of chill factore
 Fiona Young (Chief Executive Officer Disability Snowsport UK) and Jeremy Wood
(Performance Director for BDST) together with Robbie Young and Nigel Kendrick attended the VIP opening as guests of chill factore in Manchester with Jeremy, a bi-lateral amputee himself, being asked to deliver an exhibition of adaptive skiing as part of a selection of other performing snowsports to the celebrity guest list and the local TV cameras - chill factor is to become a key base for both the wider charity and the team providing an all year opportunity for activity and training in the North West. We look forward to making full use of these excellent facilities and building strong ties with the management and staff.

Funding boost for emerging athletes in build up to London 2012
