World Cup, Kimberley, BC, (24-26 Jan 07)
Liz Miller was still nursing her earlier injury but managed to squeeze in another top ten place in the GS to finish 8th. The more technically demanding slalom course took its toll and Miller missed a gate on her first run and thus disqualified herself from a second run.
Rose still continued to perform – the gruelling schedule does however place high demands on these racers. Being more of a home event for Rose with Kimberley being his principal training area across the Atlantic, he had high expectations. The standard at these World cup races are astounding, some awesome skiers and people Rose has looked up to over last few years (whom he is now starting to beat or get very close too). His goal at the beginning of the year was a top 10 finish at this level and now this is beginning to become a regular occasion.
GS race - 10th
Gorgeous day and great conditions. First race, mistake at the 4th gate before up to speed cost Rose time on the flat section, stepped up a gear and finished well. It’s such a fine line at this level that the smallest error costs!! Placed 8th. Second race, tough coarse and racing well, pushed too hard into the first steep pitch and got low, late and heavy at the bottom into a big turn, couldn’t hold onto it and had to dump speed to get round the next gate. Crawled to the 2nd pitch and then made up good speed to the finish. Rose dropped a few places to finish overall 10th place.
SL event - 9th
First race, Rose cautious out of the gate, started moving and working the ski well following a few mistakes higher up the course. Finished in 13th place disappointed and a little off the pace. Set plans for the 2nd race. Rose had a great run, gates flying passed and able to react due to more movement on the ski. Took 4 seconds off his 1st run time and moved up the scoreboard into 9th place. Couldn’t have skied much better and with lots to work on and improve in Slalom was pretty happy with his progress.
In the interim Russell Docker flew over to Aspen for the weekends Winter X Games as one of only 16 successful entrants. Unfortunately, equipment failure before the final races meant Russell coming home empty handed
